Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) / Crack Testing
Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), also known as Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) & Crack Testing, is a highly effective non-destructive testing (NDT) method used to detect surface and near-surface defects in ferromagnetic materials, including steel and iron. It is one of the most reliable techniques available for identifying cracks, discontinuities, and other flaws that could compromise the integrity and performance of critical components.
During the inspection process, the component is magnetised either locally or across its entire surface. In a defect-free material, the magnetic field remains contained within the component. However, when a surface-breaking or near-surface defect is present, the magnetic field is disrupted, creating a magnetic flux leakage at the flaw location.
Fine iron particles, applied either as a dry powder or suspended in a liquid carrier, are then introduced to the surface. These particles are attracted to areas of flux leakage, accumulating around the defect and creating a clear visual indication. Even extremely fine cracks can be detected, making MPI an accurate, efficient, and cost-effective inspection solution for a wide range of industries.
