Penetrant Testing (PT), also known as Liquid Penetrant Inspection (LPI) or Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection (FPI), is a highly effective non-destructive testing (NDT) method used to detect surface-breaking defects in a wide range of non-porous materials.
The process works by applying a specially formulated coloured or fluorescent penetrant to the surface, allowing it to seep into any cracks, porosity, or discontinuities through capillary action. After a controlled dwell period, the excess penetrant is removed and a developer is applied, drawing any trapped penetrant back to the surface and clearly highlighting the presence of defects.
Depending on the application, inspections can be carried out using either colour contrast penetrants under white light or fluorescent penetrants under ultraviolet (UV) light, providing exceptional sensitivity for critical inspections.
To ensure reliable and accurate results, thorough surface preparation is essential. Proper cleaning allows penetrant to enter any surface defects, while careful removal of excess penetrant prevents false or misleading indications.
